History of the NYIT de Seversky Mansion

  • In 1916, famed architect Thomas Hastings designed this neoclassic Georgian mansion for Alfred I DuPont. Completed in 1918 at a cost of $1.1 million the estate was called “White Eagle”
  • In 1926 the estate was sold to Fredrick and Amy Phipps Guest who renamed it “Templeton.” In 1928 Mrs. Guest’s parents dismantled their Fifth Avenue residence, literally room by room, and divided it up among their children. The white Italian marble hallway was reassembled here and remains as our grand entrance. The dining room from that 5th Ave. residence can be found at the Coles House at Old Westbury Gardens.
  • In 1972 NYIT purchased Templeton from the Guest family and named it after Russian aviator Alexander P. de Seversky, the NYIT Board of Trustees member who was instrumental in the acquisition.

Facts and Figures

  • The trees in front of the mansion are European Linden trees. They were planted by Mr. duPont in 1918.
  • The original 13 bedrooms on the 2nd floor are today used as NYIT offices
  • There are 18 fireplaces in the mansion
  • The home is constructed of Steel and Cement
  • There is a natural lake at the north end of the property. The water from that lake was pumped through certain rooms of the mansion to help keep it cool during the summer months
  • The original kitchen was located in what is now the Dining Room
  • The entrance hall, reception room, and exterior colonnade of the ballroom appear in the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli
  • The estate originally sat on some 300 acres that stretched to what is now Glen Cove Road
